West Valley Resident Takes Anti-Fan Violence Campaign to State Capitol

Despite still suffering from injuries due to his Dec. 19, 2011 beating at Candlestick Park, Manuel Austin has joined legislative efforts to curb unruly sportsmanship.

It’s been four months since Manuel Austin was brutally beaten by fans sitting in front of him and his family during a Dec. 19, 2011 San Francisco 49ers Monday night football game. The 66-year-old Los Gatos resident still suffers from persistent headaches, hearing loss in his left ear and neck and back pain related to the beating that happened at the hands of fellow fans. He’s been seeing a pain specialist weekly and said that he’s recently experienced vomiting. "This is someting that I live with everyday," Austin said. Only one of the three men who attacked him, Mark Bollock of Mendocino County, was cited for the incident. The San Francisco District Attorney, Austin said, has not prosecuted the case pending the completion of a San …

Grow a Beard for Charity and Support the San Jose Sharks Playoff Run

Show us your playoff beard. San Jose Sharks Beard-a-Thon fundraiser supports local charities.

... The San Jose Sharks earned a spot in the Stanley Cup Playoffs again this season—which means things are about to get hairy. The team is encouraging fans to participate in the annual Beard-a-Thon, a superstition-turned fundraiser to collect money for charity. Players stop shaving once they make the playoffs and continue to avoid shaving until they are eliminated or win the Stanley Cup. The superstition is believed to have started in the 1980s with the New York Islanders, who did not make the playoffs this season. Fans are encouraged to join in on the tradition by either participating in the beard-growing event or by pledging a donation to support their friends or favorite team member. And at Cupertino Patch, we want to see your growth, …

Campbell Came Out to the Ball Game

Campbell Little League celebrates 59 years in 2012.

The weather stayed dry long enough March 17 for the Campbell Little League to kick off its latest season. The stands were full, the fields were packed and the flags flew high. The ceremony took place at the Robert Holman field, named after one of the league's coaches, says Dennis Belluomini, little league treasurer. "He was a manager for a number of years and gave up his team to be director," Belluomini says. "He basically took care of the fields. He was always out there, whether pulling weeds or fixing a sprinkler, Bob was there." The field was dedicated to him in 1980 for his 26 years of service to the league.

LETTER: Local Geese Provide 'Flyover' During Opening Ceremonies

Campbell Patch encourages the Campbell community to share its voice, opinion and thoughts through letters to the editor.

Campbell Patch attended the official opening ceremonies of the Campbell Little League on March 17. The rain held off just long enough for the community to enjoy the event. We received a letter from one of the coaches, Garey Williams. As I rolled outta bed this morning (still full from corned beef, cabbage, and green drinks), I reflected on what a memorable day yeaterday was. Sure, I sang the National Anthem...  And from the positive feedback that I received for the next six hours from parents, players, and other coaches, my shower singing is paying off. The most interesting part of the performance, however, was the wedge of geese which provided a low altitude flyover!  Three geese formed a small "V" overhead as "the rockets red glare...…

Campbell Celebrates 60

One for the Ages

A ragtag group of Campbell boys captured the world's imagination when they became the only Northern California baseball team to ever win a Little League World Series title.

Late in the summer of 1962, 14 boys from Campbell surprised the world when they won the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. They are one of only six baseball teams from the Silicon Valley to have gone to the tournament and remain the only Northern California team to have taken home the title. The players, who ranged between 11 and 12 years old, belonged to Moreland Little League, which encompasses both San Jose and Campbell. The league is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the ’62 team's win by bringing back several of the players for its opening day ceremonies this Saturday. Moreland is also hosting a reunion dinner that’s open to the public at Mountain Mike’s Pizza that night. The evening will double as a fundraiser for the …
