Lynhaven Student Wins Poster Contest

Posters depicting the Campbell Library show colorful insight into what the library offers.

All eyes, and markers, were on the Campbell Library this year. "Discover Campbell Library" was the theme of the Campbell Civic Improvement Commission's 9th Annual Poster Contest, open to fifth graders throughout Campbell. Last year's theme was "Be Fit and Healthy in Campbell" and included posters depicting food pyramids, the Campbell Community center and its track. This year, posters showcased books, computer screens, CD players and comics. There were about 70 entries. Lynhaven Elementary School fifth grader Mary Jo Mendoza took home the grand prize, a mountain bike donated by Wheel Away Cycle Center of Campbell for her poster. West Valley College President Lori Gaskin Resigns

Longtime college leader will step down July 1 to become president of Santa Barbara City College.

Concluding a nationwide search, Santa Barbara Community College District trustees have announced the appointment of West Valley College President Lori Gaskin as their new superintendent and president. Gaskin will start her new position effective July 1, taking over the position that Dr. Jack Friedlander, Santa Barbara City College executive vice president, has held since July 2011. "Sometimes life presents us with unexpected opportunities and I have been given that gift recently. Man with a Gun Near Branham High School Prompts Shelter in Place

San Jose Police searched for an hour for the two suspects but found nothing. The case is ongoing.

Four local schools including Branham High School had a "shelter in place" put on them after a man with a gun was seen nearby. The initial call came in to San Jose Police at 1:52 p.m. and the caller said he had arrived at his truck and found two people going through the bed of this truck," said San Jose Police Sgt. Jason Dwyer. "He challenged them and one suspect pulled a handgun. They both fled." The incident took place near Campbell Union High School District's Branham and two other elementaries: Reed and Hammer. "We contacted the schools because they were in the near proximity," Dwyer said. Food Trucks for Schools- Arriving at Campbell's Westmont High

Ten food trucks bring the food truck craze to Campbell, benefiting Westmont High School's Grad Night.

Do you smell that? That's the smell of the food truck craze driving into Campbell this Friday, April 27. Westmont High School is holding its first Food Truck Rally, benefitting Grad Night in the Westmont parking lot on Friday from 5:00 to 9:00 p.m. and the event is open to the public. In fact, Jan Vargas, Westmont Parent Teacher Student Association member says that everyone in Campbell should come out. "It's a great community thing to go to and the food is great," Vargas says. The San Francisco Peninsula Press Club is offering grants to high school journalism programs. . Grants can be used for: Grants will be awarded at the discretion of the Board of Directors of the San Francisco Peninsula Press Club. The grant program is open to all Bay Area high schools with journalism programs. Applications may only be submitted by the school's journalism teacher or class adviser. West Valley-Mission Community Colleges Seek Measure C Support

West Valley College President Lori Gaskin and Adrienne Grey, president of the West Valley-Mission Community College District board of trustees appeared this month before the Campbell City Council and the Los Gatos Town Council seeking an endorsement for the upcoming $350 million Measure C ballot initiative. Gaskin said supporting the 40-year Measure C is an investment in the community's future. The two-college district includes West Valley College in Saratoga and Mission College in Santa Clara and enroll more than 26,000 students annually. The district serves residents of Los Gatos, Monte Sereno, Saratoga, Campbell, Sunnyvale, Cupertino and Santa Clara and is governed by a seven-member board. Castlemont Joins Montalvo's Arts Splash!

The Campbell elementary school's 'Tapestry of Color, Shapes, Thoughts, and Quotes' becomes part of Montalvo's third annual art festival.

Third and fourth graders busily put together small squares of art in room 33. Multi-colored paper clips littered desks, acting as hooks between the small, sometimes abstract piece of art created by about 350 Castlemont Elementary School students. These third through fifth grade students were preparing for their very first time being part of Montalvo's annual Arts Splash!, an open house/open studios and student art festival, now in its third year. The artwork, color swatches from the Home Depot or paint stores with designs made by paint chips and a written poem, quote, hope or dream on the back, will be installed at the event on April 21.
