Dwight Bentel founded the School of Journalism at this editor's alma mater, in 1936, and died May 16. He was 103.
As the Spartan Daily broke the news Wednesday of Dwight Bentel's death at 103, news spread quickly throughout the journalism community. According to the article, Bentel helped create the Spartan Daily in 1934 and founded the journalism program at San Jose State Univerisity in 1936. Dwight Bental Hall, the home of what we call the J-school, was named after him in 1982. He also worked on the committee that helped write the Brown Act that governs public officials' transaction of public business in meetings. Before his death this week, I got a text message from a colleague to tell me that Dwight had suffered a stroke and was in a coma. My heart sank. That was May 9. An interview by Elizabeth Schainbaum.
Is your nose stuffy or runny? Eyes itchy? Throat scratchy? Allergies are nothing to sneeze at. Kaiser Permanente had a Q&A with with Dr. Nguyen to gain a better understanding on allergies, which affect one in five Americans and account for 17 million outpatient visits a year, according to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America. What are allergies and why do some people …

'The overwhelming love I have for my children far outweighs those moments that you wonder how you'll ever make it through.'
Editor's note: This post was written by Marlene LaMar, whose daughter, Sierra, was kidnapped on March 16 from Morgan Hill. The post has been edited for brevity. Mother’s Day is a time of reflection on what being a mom has brought to your life. Being a mom has been the greatest joy of my life.. From the moment I knew that a little life was growing inside me, there was an overwhelming need to protect and nurture my child. It’s not always an easy job. A child develops ideas of their own, and sometimes a mom might disagree because of personal experiences and wisdom. We hover, discipline and teach them to be responsible. We do these things because of our unconditional love for our children. I hope as mothers, we guide them to make good …

We received this letter today about the annual Bunnies and Bonnets Parade and a special little guy. Lil Oscar is our Specially-abled Shih Tzu. It was his 14th birthday on the day of the Bunnies & Bonnets Parade. He's been Specially-abled since Halloween 2000. He had a wonderful time celebrating in his Easter Egg Covered Wagon Wheelchair. Two years ago we built a Covered Wagon to fit over his Wheelchair, he's been doing parades and events throughout the Bay Area since. He wants to show everyone that even a "Handicapped" Dog can live a full and joyous life inspiring everyone who sees him. He's heard of Veterinarians and other advise to put a dog to sleep since he can't walk. Lil Oscar does not agree and instead has a full life in and out of …
