OBITUARY: Anna Stojanovich

The woman behind the Stojanovich Family park died on April 21.

From the Campbell Express Anna Stojanovich, 88, passed away on Saturday, April 21, 2012. A life-long resident of Campbell, she grew up on the family property on Latimer Avenue, working the many orchards and canneries in the area with her sister Margaret Bogner of Santa Cruz, and her late brothers Steve and Peter Ban. She was married for 51 years to the late Edward Stojanovich and for many years worked by his side in the orchard on Union Avenue where they farmed apricots, cherries and prunes. Several local prune farmers brought their produce to the dehydrator to be processed by the couple. When the prune business eventually moved from Santa Clara Valley, Ed and Anna planted corn, which they sold for many years at their local vegetable stand…

Who’s Funding Eshoo’s 2012 Campaign?

Anna Eshoo’s top donors revealed.

A look at Open Secrets’ profile for U.S. Rep. Anna Eshoo (D-CA) reveals a predominantly high-tech list of donors to her 2012 reelection campaign. Eshoo’s top backer is Gilead Sciences, of Foster City, which has given $22,000 to her campaign committee from individuals and PACs combined, according to the Center for Responsive Politics, which runs OpenSecrets.org. Gilead’s PAC has given the same amount of money to Republicans as to Democrats so far this year: $10,000 each, including $5,000 to Rep. Jackie Speier (D-CA), $5,000 to Rep. Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and $5,000 to Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY). In the number two slot is Oracle, which gave Eshoo $15,500 total this cycle. Oracle’s campaign spending has slightly favored …

Memories of a Gentle Giant

Matt Connolly died unexpectedly on Feb. 23.

The following obituary/celebration of life was written by Joe Connolly. Matt graduated Westmont High School in 1973. Forever, since the time he was born in Salinas, CA in September 1954, was he destined to be different and memorable.  Many people in the San Jose and Campbell area knew him as the man who “waved” at everyone, near the corner of Campbell Avenue and San Tomas Aquino Road for years and also greeted everyone inside the Longs Drugs.  Matt became really not different, but more like a “savant” always remembering everyone’s family connections and how old they were. He passed away unexpectedly on Feb. 23 due to cancer, pneumonia and infections that his immune system could not fight off. His life was celebrated at St. Thomas of …

Occupiers Regroup After Camp Dismantled (UPDATED with Occupy Statement)

The Occupy Santa Cruz Camp was dismantled early Sunday morning. Occupy issued a statement late Sunday claiming police had unfairly targeted a few people in the movement.

About 10 tents and the Occupy Santa Cruz “Dome” were removed from the front of the Courthouse around 6:30 on Sunday morning. Sixty Santa Cruz Sheriff's deputies in riot gear also removed about 25 protesters from the encampment. Their belongings were put in a storage pod across the street until they can collect them later in the week. No arrests were made. Already, protesters have begun to trickle back to the courthouse steps, as they have been told they are allowed to occupy the space until 7:30 p.m. each night. The yard where many of the tents had been set up is now roped off.  Occupy Santa Cruz will hold a General Assembly meeting at 2:30 p.m. for the next four Sundays, inviting the community to the discussion.  Late Sunday the group …

Local business makes a living on outside money and people bringing it in in the form of tourism, retirees and students. As a result of this santa cruz has a huge homeless population along with a equally huge and even larger alcohol and drug addict and mentally unstable population. Denial has been a river called the san lorenzo levee. For as long as memory serves, and memories are short in santa …   more ›

Orchard Valley Coffee's 'Santa,' Ted Mehalko

The Campbell resident died this week. A memorial will be held Oct. 9 at the coffee house he frequented: OVC.

The following obituary was provided by the Mehalko family. The city of Campbell has lost an icon. Ted Mehalko, 78, passed away on October 3, 2011, after a short illness. He attended University of Pittsburgh graduating with a degree in metallurgical engineering and mine sciences in 1960. He worked as an engineer in a variety of applications. Ted was an original, a one-and-only, marching to his own drummer with his white beard and signature do-rag. He often dressed as Santa at Christmas and embodied the spirit of the mythic figure year round: kind, caring, and generous—with a dash of curmudgeon thrown in.  He was never one to let moss grow under his feet and was always on the move: whether by bicycle, an old Ford truck, his trusty Vanagon, …

I work at Orchard Valley Coffee pretty frequently throughout the week. I always saw Ted hovering over various groups of people, smiling a quiet smile. I wasn't actually introduced until his daughter, Pam passed away in July. Gary Dunn, a local homeless man that spends his afternoons at OVC made the initial introduction. I saw the flyers Ted and his family were passing out and asked if I could …   more ›

A Final Goodbye For Andrew Daou

Hundreds turn out to mourn loss of 22-year-old Valley Christian High School graduate.

About 700 people, young and old, packed The Home Church on Winchester Boulevard in Campbell Saturday afternoon to celebrate the life of Andrew Daou. The memorial service for Daou, who died July 27 in his unincorporated Los Gatos home from a gunshot wound, featured favorite Bible readings and musical selections from Daou’s piano teacher identified only as "Samia." His best friend, Ben Moreno, with father Hector Moreno, of Campbell, shared memories of the 22-year-old Valley Christian High School graduate who was loved by friends and family for his kind and noble spirit. “He had his Bible with him all the time, as well as his water bottle, which was probably his best friend,” said Ben Moreno, as the crowd chuckled. The Morenos told fond …

Pam Mehalko Loved to Walk the Streets of Downtown Campbell

Campbell resident Pam Mehalko died on July 10, 2011.

Pam Mehalko was very friendly to all those who knew her. She enjoyed walking downtown in the early morning and would get really close to those she encountered along the way, just to say hello. Mehalko, 49, died unexpectedly on Sunday. Her family wishes to thank everyone who was a part of her life. "She always had high spirits, never complained and liked people," says her father Ted Mehalko, a regular at Orchard Valley Coffee. "She had lots of friends here." Mehalko was born in New Orleans at Hotel Dieu, renamed University Hospital, on Dec. 27, 1962. Her father, an aerospace engineer with Boeing at the time, traveled extensively from Hawaii to Mexico, and before coming to California, Pennsylvania. When Mehalko was about 8 months old, she …
