The Father of Local Journalism Dies

Dwight Bentel founded the School of Journalism at this editor's alma mater, in 1936, and died May 16. He was 103.

As the Spartan Daily broke the news Wednesday of Dwight Bentel's death at 103, news spread quickly throughout the journalism community. According to the article, Bentel helped create the Spartan Daily in 1934 and founded the journalism program at San Jose State Univerisity in 1936. Dwight Bental Hall, the home of what we call the J-school, was named after him in 1982. He also worked on the committee that helped write the Brown Act that governs public officials' transaction of public business in meetings. Before his death this week, I got a text message from a colleague to tell me that Dwight had suffered a stroke and was in a coma. My heart sank. That was May 9. On May 16, my husband texted me that the man who fathered the journalism …

Lynhaven Student Wins Poster Contest

Posters depicting the Campbell Library show colorful insight into what the library offers.

All eyes, and markers, were on the Campbell Library this year. "Discover Campbell Library" was the theme of the Campbell Civic Improvement Commission's 9th Annual Poster Contest, open to fifth graders throughout Campbell. Last year's theme was "Be Fit and Healthy in Campbell" and included posters depicting food pyramids, the Campbell Community center and its track. This year, posters showcased books, computer screens, CD players and comics. There were about 70 entries. Lynhaven Elementary School fifth grader Mary Jo Mendoza took home the grand prize, a mountain bike donated by Wheel Away Cycle Center of Campbell for her poster. "Truly, it encompassed everything," said Sherrie Doherty, recording secretary for the civic improvement …

Witnesses Come Forward in LaMar Kidnapping

Witnesses are coming forward with details about the red Volkswagen Jetta that's being associated with the disappearance of Sierra LaMar, according to the teen's mother.

News about a red Volkswagen Jetta being associated with the disappearance of Morgan Hill teen Sierra Lamar is apparently prompting witnesses to come forward, according to Marlene LaMar. “It’s just that, with the release of the vehicle that’s out and talking to the media, more people are coming forward,” LaMar said. “I can’t disclose specifically, but law enforcement is interviewing witnesses that are coming forward because of all of that. More people are coming forward, so that’s been a positive thing." Although detectives working on the LaMar case won’t release many details regarding the Volkswagen’s association, LaMar said authorities are currently looking into whether the VW is the right vehicle, and whether surveillance footage depicts…

Search For Sierra Remains Strong, 2 Months Later

Wednesday marks the two month anniversary of Sierra LaMar's disappearance, and more searches are already scheduled.

Friends and family of missing Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar are marking the two-month anniversary of her disappearance today with another search. Sierra, 15, disappeared after she left for school on the morning of March 16, prompting extensive searches of the area. Sheriff's investigators have said they believe her disappearance is an abduction. “This is not how I wanted to acknowledge this date,” Sierra’s father, Steve, said. “But I am grateful that the community continues to support her cause.” Despite Sierra’s multi-month absence, support remains strong for the Sobrato High Student, with more searches underway today and Saturday.  “The KlaasKids Foundation is continuing to assist law enforcement and the LaMar family with future searches…

New High Density Development Approved

Residents question the rapid growth of the city.

The Campbell City Council unanimously approved a high-density, mixed-use development last night, but the bigger discussion that came out of the meeting was on the city’s future growth. "I understand that people are concerned that there will be too many people in Campbell," said Campbell Mayor Mike Kotowski. "The point is, the city will change. There has to be a certain amount of trust that we (the city council) are going to do the right thing for the right reasons." Bay West Development received approval for its planned development at 1677 S. Bascom Ave., a mixed-use project that includes 168 apartment units and 15,295 square feet of ground floor commercial. The approval also allowed the developer to remove 66 protected trees. Initially …

Don't think of it as a strip mall. Think of it as a source for tax revenue. That's how the city council thinks of it. I'm sure the council members nearly wet themselves when they saw the projected revenue from fees and such. The development doesn't have to look good. It doesn't have to fit in with Campbell's "small town" feel. It just has to generate revenue. Do you think the city gave any …   more ›

A Different Kind of 'Tasting' for Campbell

Rocket Fizz of Campbell holds its second soda tasting May 18, featuring root beer.

What's the difference between root beer, birch beer and sarsaparilla? Rocket Fizz of Campbell invites the public to find out at their first root beer tasting this Friday, May 18 from 5:00-9:00 p.m. "One comment we consistently get is that there are so many sodas in here that they don't know what they'd like," says Chris Dunn, co-owner of the soda and candy shop. "There are a lot of people that don't drink so they can't do wine or beer tastings. This is an opportunity to try something different." The shop offers 50 different varieties of root beer but the Friday tasting will include three different root beers and two sarsaparillas. The tasting costs $5 and includes a commemorative tasting glass. Rocket Fizz kicked off its first tasting with…

Q&A: Kaiser Doctor Talks Allergy Season

An interview by Elizabeth Schainbaum.

Is your nose stuffy or runny? Eyes itchy? Throat scratchy? Allergies are nothing to sneeze at. Allergy season depends on where you live and if you are allergic to grass, trees, weeds, or dust mites, according to Myngoc Nguyen, MD, chief of Allergy for Kaiser Permanente Oakland Medical Center. If you are allergic to all of these things—and more and more people are—and if you come into contact with what you are allergic to, then your symptoms can last year-round. Kaiser Permanente had a Q&A with with Dr. Nguyen to gain a better understanding on allergies, which affect one in five Americans and account for 17 million outpatient visits a year, according to the Allergy and Asthma Foundation of America. What are allergies and why do some people …

To Protect Sierra, Detectives Share Little Info

Investigators continue to learn more, but release little under assumption Sierra LaMar is alive.

The red, Volkswagen Jetta that investigators are associating with the kidnapping of Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar has yet to undergo forensic examination, and it’s not clear when it will happen. “The vehicle is in evidence, and will be examined at some point,” Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jose Cardoza said. Cardoza also said investigators aren't specifically commenting on what they’re looking for, and that they've identified the owner of the car, but haven't named any persons of interest. Limited details about the vehicle—captured in surveillance footage near key areas in the LaMar case—are being released as a precaution: Investigators don’t want to compromise the case and subsequently harm Sierra, who they believe is still alive. “A…

Divers to Verify "Questionable" Objects in LaMar Case

Divers will study items captured via sonar at Anderson, Almaden and Guadalupe reservoirs.

Sheriff’s divers are returning to Anderson, Almaden and Guadalupe reservoirs to verify objects that divers captured via sonar last week while searching for clues in the disappearance of Morgan Hill teen Sierra LaMar. “Some images, like in prior water searches, came up that were questionable,” Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Sgt. Jose Cardoza said. Questionable items that have appeared in past water searches include tires, vehicles, trees and large tree stumps, among other large objects.  The divers will be returning to the reservoirs this week, starting at Anderson on Wednesday, and Almaden and Guadalupe reservoirs the following days. On Monday and Tuesday, divers returned to the Coyote Creek Watershed to verify areas of interest detected via…
