Summer Challenge - Making New Friends

I recently read an article about the difficulties of making new friends as an adult, specifically for the over thirty crowd. At 24, I’m starting to feel the pain. I already worry about ending up a crazy old spinster, now I have to worry about the dwindling number of years I have left to make friends. Great.

The article says that people usually notice their neglect of new friend making when they experience a big life event, such as a move. I could not agree more, moving in with my parents did make me very aware of the limited number of friends I have in Campbell.

Fortunately, I’m a very proactive optimist, so (challenge accepted) I’m going to make a ton of new friends this Summer. How, you ask? Here is my plan of attack:

1. XOSO

XOSO is an amazing sport & social league for adults. I’ve been participating on XOSO teams for the past two years and cannot say enough great things about it. They have participants of all age levels (over 21), it’s active, and after your game the whole league goes out for drinks at a sponsored bar. I met ALL my friends in Sacramento through XOSO, and plan to repeat this new friend making maneuver here.

It’s super easy! If you don’t have enough friends to field an entire team, don’t worry! You can sign up as an individual and you’ll get placed on a team, BOOM, you just made 9 new friends! Good job.

I pulled 10 people together for the upcoming Summer volleyball season. We don’t start playing until July 11th, but I already met one of my new teammates. She’s awesome and also loves Aqui Swirls. BOOM! One new friend!

2. Campbell Summer Concert Series

I just found out about this and I’m so excited. The next concert is this Thursday (June 27th) in Downtown Campbell! Since I love live music, this will be a great place to meet new friends.

3. Grouper

I heard about Grouper from one of my trendy friends in San Francisco. Grouper is a social club that sets up drinks between two groups of friends; 3 guys and 3 girls. It costs $20 a person, which gets you a drink and three new friends. Totally worth it.

I’ve only been on one Grouper so far, and I’m sold. First, I found an awesome new bar, 7 Stars Bar & Grill on Bascom Ave. (okay, it’s in San Jose... close enough) They have karaoke and beer pong! Then, three attractive guys walked up to hang out with us all night. (Boom! Yes, I’ll be your friend. No, I’m not starring at your perfect hair.) Grouper does an amazing job matching the groups up and making it a fun night. They have a Instagram competition to give your group a good icebreaker (search #groupergram to see). All you have to do is hang out and enjoy an evening with your new friends. I can’t stress enough - it’s not a date! Could you potentially meet a great new guy/girl? - Yes. More likely you are going to meet three new pals for your XOSO and trivia team.

4. Trivia Night

In college I was a huge fan of trivia night. So, when I stumbled into Khartoum’s last Tuesday to play shuffle board and found the place packed full of fellow trivia lovers I was thrilled. I am now in the process of fielding the best trivia team Campbell has ever seen. I will keep you posted on the success of this friend making endeavor. I am hoping to show up tomorrow night and scope out the competition.

And that’s it so far.
