TRACK AND FIELD: State Finals Begin in Clovis

Prospect's Biawogi advances to today's championships in Boys 300 Hurdles.

The Central Coast Section’s best got a firsthand look at the rest of California’s finest during Friday's California Interscholastic Federation State Track and Field Championships at Buchanan High in Clovis.

Several winners from last week’s CCS Finals in Gilroy survived the first day of cuts to advance to today’s CIF State Championships in Clovis, a small town just 15 minutes east of Fresno.

Aptos’ Nikki Hiltz (Girls 1600) and Nikki Myashita (Girls High Jump) both moved on as well as Homestead High’s Rachel Bolton (Girls Pole Vault), Prospect’s Kamara Biawogi (Boys 300 Hurdles) and the Gilroy 4X100 boys relay team to name a few.

The Gilroy boys 4x100 relay ran 41.66 to finish third in their loaded heat to qualify for tonight’s rain or shine running finals.

After claiming the Central Coast Section crown and the school record in the Girls 800 and 1600 events last weekend in Gilroy, Aptos High sophomore Hiltz continued her dream season with a first place qualifying time of 4:48.20 in her heat of the Girls 1600 prelims on Friday.

Still riding her high from last week’s big win in Gilroy, Homestead High-Cupertino junior Bolton hung with the leaders and cleared 11-09.00 successfully to move into today’s event finals

Mountain View junior Allison Sturges also qualified for today’s Girls 1600 championship race with a time of 4:50.29. She finished in third place in the second heat behind Hiltz and Serra High-San Mateo entrant Katherine Delaney.

Another Mariner moving on was CCS girls high jump third place finisher Myashita. The Mariners junior qualified with a mark of 5-04.00.

Mountain View High junior Samantha Sinclair continued her Cinderella story in the Girls Shot Put.

With the 2011 CCS title already in tow, Sinclair launched a throw of 40-08.75 on her second attempt Friday to advance to today’s finals.

Grant Foster of Los Gatos missed the cut in the Boys 1600, finishing six seconds off the qualifying cut with a time of 4:19.40.

The Wildcats senior finished second in last week’s CCS Championships in the 1600. The Patch Silicon Valley trio of Markell Stine (Los Altos), Sean Goeztl (Aptos) and Kamara Biawogi (Prospect) all ended their state track and field run in the Boys 110 Hurdles on Day One.

Goeztl, the CCS champ in the Boys 110 Hurdles, ran a 14.75 to finish fifth in his heat. Biawogi finished in fourth in the first heat of the event and recorded a time of 14.84. Stine’s time came in just behind Biawogi.

Later on in the evening, the Prospect speedster hung with the pack and roared down the final stretch to earn a berth in today’s Boys 300 Hurdles finale. Biawogi earned a time 38.28, the third fastest in his heat.

Palo Alto senior Maurice Williams knows a thing or two about a state title run. The speedy wide receiver was a member of the 2010 State Champion football team last fall and booked a spot in the Boys 100 finals on Friday with a scorching time of 10.71. Williams finished in second place last week behind Gilroy sprinter Jourdan Soares.

Soares ran a 10.77 to narrowly miss the cut by .02 seconds for today’s finals. The Mustangs junior will still make a finals showing, anchoring the Boys 4x100 relay team against some of the fastest relay squads in the nation.

In the girls 800, Kieran Gallagher (Gunn) and Cindy Huang (Lynbrook) both missed the cut to end their super 2011 seasons.

The boys and girls 3200 participants didn’t have a preliminary race on Friday. The finals of both event will be held today. Local participants include, CCS boys champion Kevin Bishop (Monta Vista), Will Geiken (Los Gatos) and Parker Schuh (Mountain View) on the boys side.
