Struggling San Jose Skate Park To Stay Open

Lake Cunningham, the largest skate park in Calif., received a $10,000 grant and visit from Tony Hawk Sunday.

A San Jose skate park, billed as the largest in California, received a $10,000 grant Sunday and , according to city officials.

The grant from the Coco-Cola Company was presented Sunday at the start of , according to City Councilmember Rose Herrera.

Lake Cunningham Regional Skate Park, a 68,000 square foot park, opened in 2008, struggled to stay open in its first years due to threatened funding cuts. But groups including the Save Our Skate Park parent group, First Five of Santa Clara County, The Health Trust and Valley Medical Center Foundation worked together to save it.

The park is now at cost-recovery, Herrera said.

"We now have enough attention drawn to the park that attendance records are at an all-time high and we can continue to market the park as a local, national and international destination site," said Herrera. "This is just what we need to bring in much needed revenue to the city while at the same time promoting healthy lifestyles for our community."
