SOFTBALL: Westmont Slugs its Way Past Leigh

Warriors score in five straight innings en route to season sweep over Longhorns.

Westmont 11, Leigh 2

The Westmont High softball team topped Leigh High 11-2 in a BVAL Mt. Hamilton League contest held on a cold, windy afternoon at Leigh on Thursday.

With the win, the Warriors keep pace with Leland High atop the league standings. Both teams are now 7-1 in league action.

After a scoreless first inning, Westmont (14-3, 7-1 Mt. Hamilton) rattled off runs in five straight innings, including three run outbursts in the third and the sixth.

As impressive as the scoring streak was, the balance displayed from the visitors lineup proved to be the real deciding factor in the road win. Eight different Westmont hitters recorded RBIs, led by freshman second baseman Cassidy Brown with two.

Up-and-down the lineup, quality at-bats led to a pass the baton mentality. All even at one after two innings, Westmont broke things up in the third.

Brown, Sarah Ossello and Allie Mohn each knocked in runs to push the lead to 4-1. A solo homerun off the bat off Leigh slugger Jenn Amaral got one run back for the Longhorns in the bottom half of the frame, but the potent Warriors offense proved to be too much.

Christine Kuhny and Casey Morris drove in runs in the fourth, followed up by two more tallies in the fifth and three more in the sixth for the Warriors.

Both teams will get a reprieve from game action during next week’s Spring Break.

Westmont returns to league play against Piedmont Hills on April 19.

Leigh, now 12-5-1 overall and 5-3 in league, will play San Benito on Saturday in a non-league game before the league break.

The Longhorns are 0-3 against Leland and Westmont in 2011.

Westmont plays at Leland on April 21.
