GIRLS SOCCER: Del Mar Remains Unbeaten Behind Plancarte's Big Day

Sulma Plancarte's second half scoring spree keeps the Dons perfect record intact.

Del Mar 3, Prospect 1

The Star: Del Mar senior forward Sulma Plancarte built upon last week’s “Player of the Week” award by pounding goals through nearly every corner of the Prospect net.  The second half scoring surge sealed the deal for the Dons, helping them improve to a near spotless 16-0-2 overall and to 10-0-2 in Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division play.

The Turning Point: Prospect led 1-0 with just over 20 minutes left in the second half when Del Mar forward Sulma Plancarte started to make her presence felt. Plancarte, who just last week was named the Dons Player of the Week for her five goals and three assists her last three games, was fouled in the Prospect goal box and was awarded a penalty kick. Del Mar junior Olivia Hadidian  took the shot and dribbled it into the bottom right corner of the net just past the outstretched arms of Prospect’s diving goalie. The goal evened the score at 1-1, but more importantly, it stole the momentum back from a visiting Prospect squad that had just scored the first goal of the game roughly 12 minutes prior. After the game-tying goal, Del Mar went on an all-out attack. Plancarte picked up two goals to secure the victory and keep the Dons’ unbeaten season intact with just two league games left on the schedule.

The Quote: "She’s been one of our leaders all year long,” said Del Mar head coach Ken Padia about Plancarte. “So it’s not surprising for her to come up with such a big game and make big plays when we really need them.”

What's Next? Del Mar will host Oak Grove on February15th, while Prospect (5-5-5, 2-4-5 STAL) will play at Pioneer High in San Jose.

Bottom Line: Although Prospect held a one-goal lead well into the second half, it felt as though it was only a matter of time before Del Mar broke through and opened up the floodgates. The Dons were on the attack nearly the entire game and outshot the Panthers 25-6. The only thing that kept Prospect from getting blown away in the first half – during which they were outshot 9-1 – was an outstanding performance by Prospect’s goaltender Lyrric Kennedy, who had seven first half saves and 16 saves overall, but Prospect could not mount a steady attack and spent nearly the entire game trying to clear its own zone. In the end, Del Mars offense was just too strong for the Prospect defenders to handle for an entire match as Del Mar won 3-1 and beat Prospect for the second time this season.
