Del Mar Blanks Palo Alto

Strong pitching propels Dons past Vikings.

Led by junior starting pitcher Tim Emory, the Del Mar High baseball team cooled the potent offense during a 3-0 round one victory on Tuesday afternoon.

The contest was a non-league game part of the Baseball Battles Cancer Tournament held at Leland High in San Jose all this week.

Emory went the distance, frustrating Paly hitters throughout the afternoon. The southpaw's strong efforts helped Del Mar (11-4-1, 8-4-1 Santa Teresa) advance into the winner's bracket of the tourney and secure a gem of a non-league win.

Dons senior slugger Cullen McGagin scored the game's first run of an RBI single by Brendan Everton in the second inning. One inning later, McGagin cranked a towering solo homer high over the fence in left field to push the Del Mar lead to 2-0.

Palo Alto (11-7, 7-3 De Anza) scattered a handful of hits, but couldn't break through in the run column. Justin Grey had two hits for the Vikings in the game.
