BASEBALL: Leigh Secures League Title

Stamps gem helps Longhorns blank Dons.

The Score: Leigh 8, Del Mar 0

The Star: Leigh High senior Mark Stamps silenced the bats of the Del Mar High baseball team, pitching a complete game six-hitter while fanning six on Senior Day Tuesday afternoon at Leigh High.

The Longhorns celebrated the achievements of their 12 seniors prior to the game before rolling to an impressive 8-0 victory.

Turning Point: With Leigh (19-6-1, 18-2 STL) ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth and only one away, the hosts scorched the visiting Dons (16-8-1, 12-6-1 STL) with a six-run rally ignited by a clutch knock from Leigh senior Brad Delaplane. A two out, two-run single by Delaplane to left gave Stamp and the Longhorns more than enough extra insurance, extending the lead to 4-0. Leigh’s Danny Rose stepped up in the very next at-bat and delivered another big blow with a two-run double to left field, giving the Longhorn fans more than enough to chew on in the Mt. Hamilton League Santa Teresa Division contest

The Quotes: “We’ve got to hit the ball a lot better than we did today---and cut the strikeouts down and play small ball,” said Del Mar Head Coach Frank Peats in regards to today’s loss against Leigh.

A lot has to happen for the Del Mar Dons if they want a chance at the wild card spot for the CCS playoffs. They have to beat Mt. Pleasant and Silver Creek and hope for a Westmont and Leland loss for a chance at CCS.

“We continued to hit the ball and I can’t say enough of what Stamps did today---he set the tone for us and what we’re all about,” said Leigh head coach Chris Perry on today’s dominant win against Del Mar.

Leigh extended it’s winning streak to five games with today’s win and swept the season series against Del Mar, 3-0.

“I was able to execute with my pitches and confuse the batters (Del Mar),” said Leigh’s Stamp on his stellar performance on the mound today against the Dons.

What’s Next? Leigh hits the road for it’s final regular season game on Thursday (5/12) against Evergreen Valley. While Del Mar hosts Mt. Pleasant  this afternoon as they try to keep their playoff dreams alive.

Bottom Line: Leigh wrapped up a Santa Teresa Division title with the win over the Dons. With the league title now in tow, the Longhorns will rest up and get ready for beginning of next weeks Central Coast Section playoffs.
