ATHLETE SPOTLIGHT: Leigh High Boys Basketball Player Sohn Nijor

The smooth shooting guard helped lead his team back to the CCS playoffs and captured co-MVP honors in Mt. Hamilton League play along the way.

Career Highlight: “Winning the league title in the last game of the regular season,” Nijor said. “The game was tied on a 3-point buzzer beater by Trevor (Peterson) to send the game into overtime.”

Go-to Move: “I like to attack the basket and force some contact,” Nijor said. “If I don’t score, then I hope I get the foul call. I just always try to put pressure on the defense to help my team win.”

College Plans: “I’m still waiting on some acceptance letters to get back,” Nijor said. “I’m hoping to go to a UC school, UC Davis or UC San Diego. Foothill and West Valley College have also talked to me about playing for them so we’ll see what happens.”

Favorite Activity off the Court: “Just hanging out with friends,” Nijor said. “I love to play sports, especially basketball, but others sports too. I enjoy playing golf and tennis.”

Best Game: “I played really well against Santa Teresa,” Nijor said. “It was the Blossom Valley League Tournament Semifinals. I scored 28 points and had five 3’s.”

Favorite TV Show: Family Guy

Teammate(s) You’ll Never Forget: “Deven Patterson,” Nijor said. “I’ve played with him since the seventh grade. We’ve always been one of the top players on the team each year we were together. It’s been great playing with him, but also having him as a friend. We hang out a lot away from school also.”

Final Four Picks: “University of North Carolina, UCONN, Kansas, St. John’s,” Nijor said. (The interview with Nijor was conducted two days prior to the tournament starting. The swing man still has three teams Final Four teams alive heading into the Sweet 16.)

Season Ride: “It was kind of surreal,” Nijor said. “This year I wasn’t expecting really more than we did last year. After we had played a couple games and won the Los Gatos tournament against some really good teams, I really thought this team could be special. It was a lot of fun to be a part of.”

Leigh finished the second 24-5 overall and shared league title honors with Piedmont Hills High. The Longhorns were eliminated by St. Francis High in the Central Coast Section Division II semifinals.
