Rising Author: Brooklyn Boyd, Rolling Hills Middle School

Campbell Union School District's Rising Young Authors series includes published works by 13 local students.

The ninth annual includes 13 students from throughout the district.

Brooklyn Boyd is the Rolling Hills Middle School winner, with her book, Happy Birthday.

Campbell Patch asked seven questions of the 13-year-old eighth grade student and here is what she had to say.

Campbell Patch: Why do you like to write?

Brooklyn Boyd: I started out writing because it was required in school. And worked to get better at it because I wanted a good grade. Then I realized how much I really enjoy it!

Patch: What do you like to write about?

Brooklyn: Anything and everything. From how my day was, to a day on Mars. Anything!

Patch: What is your favorite book?

Brooklyn: Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

Patch: Do you have a favorite character? What do you like about them?

Brooklyn: I love Suzanne Collins' book Hunger Games because it is surprisingly well written and has a unique plot.

Patch: Do you have a favorite author? What do you like about them?

Brooklyn: Happy Birthday is about a girl who makes an unusual birthday wish.

Patch: What is your book about?

Brooklyn: I really like expressing myself and my creativity. You (and your characters) can say, do, and be anything you want to in your stories.

Excerpt of Happy Birthday is under photos to the right.

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth. Thank you for sharing your story and memories! Very truly yours, Karen Hunt Great grandaughter of the owner of the Original Fabers Cyclery.
