Tofu Class with Minh Tsai of Hodo Soy Beanery

Join us Tuesday, February 21st from 6:00 to 9:00pm at Hodo Soy Beanery, 2923 Adeline Street in Oakland, for an evening of tofu exploration with founder and tofu master Minh Tsai.

The night begins as we fill our tummies with a spread of Minh and Hodo Soy’s wonderful food while Minh introduces us to all things tofu.  He will discuss the fascinating story of tofu in America, giving you an insight to the economic, science, and culinary perspectives to this ancient food.  The lecture will be followed with each of you making your own tofu with Minh inside the Beanery (where all the fresh and delicious eats are produced each day).

Please note: In order to make tofu during the workshop, you will need a tofu press.  We have negotiated with a manufacturer to get presses, made with cypress wood, at a discounted price of $18, which you’ll have the option of ordering when you sign up for the class.  You are also welcome to bring your own press if you already own one.  Don’t have a tofu press and not ready to commit to one? You can still come to the class, enjoy dinner, and watch Minh demonstrate the steps to making tofu at home!

You will leave the workshop with your own freshly made block of tofu and everything you need to make tofu at home: two bottles of soy milk, calcium sulfate and the optional tofu press.  In addition, you get a goodie bag of Hodo’s products (a package each of firm tofu, braised tofu, tea-braised tofu and yuba), not to mention the dinner – which, by the way, will include Minh’s famous Nama Yuba, the ‘caviar of tofu,’ a tender version of tofu skin that is creamy and rich, currently only sold to Bay Area restaurants.  It’s guaranteed to be like nothing you’ve tasted before!
