Volunteer "Victims" Needed for Emergency Trainings

Cupertino's emergency responders need people to act as victims at a Saturday training at Blackberry Farms. Santa Clara County Fire needs "victims" for a Tuesday training.

Volunteer victims are still needed for two emergency exercises; the first takes place Saturday at Blackberry Farm Park, the second on Tuesday in Campbell and Saratoga.

Students can earn service hours (and snacks!) for pretending to be a victim in the exercise for Cupertino Citizen Corps CARES, CERT, MRC, DART, Block Leaders and Neighborhood Watch groups.

The exercise runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and there are both morning or afternoon shifts, or all day shifts.

Registration can be done online http://2012victimsccc.eventbrite.com.
Saturday’s drill will focus on basic CERT (Community Emergency Response Training), radio and medical skills including such practices as First Aid, safely transporting people, search and rescue, triage, utilities shutoff, and more.

There is an online training schedule on the City’s website for more detail. Contact Ken Ericksen at 408-777-3176, kennethe@cupertino.org for more information.

The second emergency training exercise is being conducted by Santa Clara County Fire on Oct. 30

Volunteers are needed to play the role of victims in need of care and shelter following a catastrophic earthquake.

The American Red Cross has one- or two-hour morning shifts open between 9:30 a.m. and 11:30 a.m. at the Campbell Community Center, at 1 West Campbell Ave. in Campbell. Register online at www.RedCrossRelief.eventbrite.com, and use password wvshelterme.

Santa Clara County Fire has one- or two-hour afternoon shifts open between 12:30 p.m. and 2 p.m. at the Saratoga Community Center, at 19655 Allendale Ave., in Saratoga.

Saratoga. Register online at www.WestValleyShakes.eventbrite.com and use password wvshelterme.

Specific instructions on “victim” duties will be provided at the exercise.

For more information, contact Miguel Grey, Senior Emergency Services Coordinator at Miguel.Grey@sccfd.net or 408-341-4486.

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth. Thank you for sharing your story and memories! Very truly yours, Karen Hunt Great grandaughter of the owner of the Original Fabers Cyclery.
