Viewfinder: Groundbreaking for Stojanovich Family Park

Campbell prepares to open the newest park in the city.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new in Campbell took place this morning.

Public officials, community members and friends came out at 9 a.m. to hear people speak about the process and history of the new park.

"This project has been a part of my life for the last two years," said. Campbell Project Engineer Edward Durango.

Since 2009, the city received 25 proposals for the project--six to nine are the norm.

"The winning bid really stood out and exceeded our expectations," Durango said to the crowd.

The Stojanovich Family Park, at 316 Union Ave. near the shopping center, will bring 1.32 acres of green space for gathering and play to a neighborhood of apartment complexes.

The land was sold for half of its market value by Anne Stojanovich to the city of Campbell in 2007.

The park will be home to the city's first bronze public art display--a sculpture of a grasshopper with an apricot, done by artist Michael McLaughlin.

Timeline:

  • Begin construction        May/June 2011
  • Install public art           Sept./Oct 2011
  • Construction complete  Dec. 2011

Source of Funds:

  • $3,877,500 from Campbell Park Dedication Fund
  • $77,500 from Santa Clara County Open Space Authority
