Students Win Poster Contest in Campbell

Campbell's annual poster contest brought out 82 entries.

Young artists put their strokes and creativity to the test, and one nabbed a mountain bike as a result.

The annual Campbell Civic Improvement Commission student poster contest drew more than 80 entries this year from fifth-graders at six elementary schools all over the city.

This year's contest theme was "Be Fit and Healthy in Campbell" and brought out colorful renditions of the , the, the track at the community center and various parks and images of healthy foods.

Entries were judged on their adherence to the theme, along with creativity, neatness, legibility, spelling and grammar.

The grand prize, a brand new mountain bike donated by of Campbell, was awarded to Shawn Rovetto, a fifth-grader at school in Campbell.

All winners were recognized and presented with prizes and certificates at the Thursday commission meeting. The first-, second- and third-place winners were also recognized at Tuesday's Campbell City Council meeting.

and also donated prizes. The commission wishes to express its gratitude to all the local businesses for their donations.

“This year’s contest was especially gratifying," commission chairwoman Traci Mitchell said in a release. "We had so many creative and thoughtful entries, it made the judging particularly difficult. We want to thank all the students, teachers, and schools who participated this year.”

In addition to the award ceremony, all poster entries will be displayed in various store windows at this month’s , beginning Friday.

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth.
