Safeway Fined $46,500 for Gas Station Glitch in Campbell

Three Safeway gas stations were fined for a glitch in a computer program that overcharged customers.

Didn't get your discount when you pumped Safeway gas?

That happened to 700 people, many in Campbell. Now, Safeway has settled with a $46,000 fine after an investigation by the Santa Clara County District Attorney's office.

Safeway reimbursed the affected customers with credit to their rewards cards on top of the fine.

The problem was discovered by a customer at the Safeway gas station on Hamilton Avenue. The promised rewards discount appeared on the receipt from the gas station but when she checked her credit card statement, it wasn't there.

The software program with the glitch was only in three Safeway stations: Campbell, Pleasant Hill and Palm Springs.

"It's always a good idea to carefully reconcile your store receipts with the charges on your credit card statement," said prosecutor Francisca Allen.
