Paul Ryan Calls Rape 'Method of Conception' — Your Thoughts?

Mitt Romney's running mate made this reference. Was it revealing? Or is it not a big deal?

In an interview last week, Paul Ryan, who would be the Vice President of the United States should Mitt Romney win the election in November, made his pro-life views clear.

In doing so, he said the following:

"I've always adopted the idea and conception that the method of conception doesn't change the definition of life."

See the video of the interview to the right. Ryan's statement begins at the 0:59 mark.

Following Senator Todd Akin's blunder last week, when he announced that the female body can reject a pregnancy in cases of "legitimate rape," this marks two comments from the Republican Party in a short span that can be interpreted as downplaying the severity of rape.

Do you think Ryan referring to rape as a "method of conception" suggests a blase attitude toward the crime? Or was it just poor word choice? Is this worse than what Akin said? Tell us in the comments!

The statement, although cold and inhuman, is correct, just like punching someone is the face is a “method of touching.” I guess the next stage will be to mandate that the rapist marry the raped women to ensure the child doesn’t grow up out of wedlock. Hey, if it’s good enough for the Taliban, it’s good enough for the GOP!

Haha, method of touching. That's a good one Cathy. I'm inclined to at least hope Ryan wasn't trying to be as cold as he came off saying rape is a "method of conception," but I'm not sure.

@Jacob: you are kinder than I. Did you read that Pennsylvania Senate candidate Tom Smith (R) compared a pregnancy caused by rape to "having a baby out of wedlock?" Please tell me these guys aren't for real...

Its just amazing to me that ANY of these guys get a single vote. I wish I could remember who said "Never underestimate the stupidity of the American voter!"

@Butch - The scary thing is, this election year the stupids really seem to be out in force!
