Are you missing some money or maybe a bag of loose diamonds? Or how about an old can of sardines? If so, California Controller John Chiang's office wants you to claim them. In fact, $6 billion in unclaimed property and cash has been turned in to the controller's office.
The Caliornia State Conroller's website states that "California's Unclaimed Property Law requires corporations, businesses, associations, financial institutions, and insurance companies (referred to as 'Holders') to annually report and deliver property to the California State Controller's Office after there has been no activity on the account or contact with the owner for a period of time specified in the law."
According to the State of California, the most common types of unclaimed property includes bank accounts, estates, certificated of deposits, stocks or uncashed cashier's checks or money orders.
The website also includes photos of "unusual unclaimed property" items like a signed photo of Neil Armstrong, gold bars, jewelry, a police badge collection and an old can of sardines.
