Anna Eshoo Releases Memorial Day Statement

Fresh off a tour of Afghanistan and Qatar, the congresswoman urges citizens to honor fallen soldiers every day of the year.

Congresswoman Anna Eshoo spent Mother's Day with troops in Afghanistan and Qatar, getting an up-close look at the sacrifices American soldiers make in the name of freedom.

She was there as part of a bi-partisan delegation of congresswomen, among them Nancy Pelosi. The group was the first delegation to enter Afghanistan since President Barack Obama and President Hamid Karzai signed the Strategic Partnership Agreement on May 1.

In a statement released for Memorial Day, Eshoo said she was heartened to learn more about efforts to bring troops home as "safely and quickly as possible."

As important as it is to recognize the bravery of soldiers still serving, Eshoo also said that it is vital Americans honor the soldiers who never make it home from battle.

“This Memorial Day we remember generations of Americans who have fought to keep our nation what it is today—a beacon of freedom and liberty to the world," Eshoo wrote. "Honoring those who defended our country cannot be confined to one day. We must honor our troops each and every day by fulfilling our promises to them, just as they fulfilled their promise to us and our nation. Their legacy is our freedom."
