BART police have arrested a man they believe may be a prolific bicycle thief, and are seeking help from the public in identifying the stolen bicycles..
Police arrested 47-year-old Brett Major, of San Francisco, on suspicion of stealing a bicycle at the 24th Street BART station in San Francisco on May 31, and believe Major may be responsible for other bicycle thefts.
Major was booked into jail in San Francisco on suspicion of burglary, theft, possession of burglary tools, and an outstanding warrant originating from Alameda County, according to BART.
Upon a subsequent search of Majors' home, officers found seven bicycle frames and parts, police said. Investigators are hoping the items' owners will come forward to identify and claim their property. BART would then seek additional charges against Major through the district attorney's office and return stolen property to its rightful owners.

Owners must provide either a case number from a theft report or show other proof of ownership before the stolen property can be claimed. Proof of ownership can be a receipt or proof of purchase that includes a serial number or other identifiable marks unique to the bicycle.

BART riders who have had bikes stolen are also encouraged to look for their stolen property on the San Francisco Police Department's Ingleside Station website, which lists 114 recovered stolen bicycles.
