A vehicle crashed into a power pole in Campbell early this morning, damaging the pole and sending the driver to a hospital, police said.

At about 5:45 a.m., officers responded to reports of a solo vehicle crash at Winchester Boulevard and West Sunnyoaks Avenue, Campbell police Sgt. Gary Berg said.

An initial investigation revealed the vehicle left the roadway while traveling south on Winchester Boulevard, striking the utility pole and shearing it in half, Berg said.

The driver was taken to a hospital with minor injuries, Berg said.

The pole was left hanging in the roadway, supported by utility wires, he said.

PG&E crews responded to the scene and rendered the area safe, according to police.

Sunnyoaks Avenue and one southbound lane on Winchester Boulevard remained closed to traffic as of 10:30 a.m., and a southbound off-ramp from San Tomas Expressway to Winchester Boulevard was also closed.

The off-ramp will remain closed for up to 24 hours, according to police.
