UPDATE: Too Close for Comfort? Violent Crime Wave in San Jose Nears Campbell Border

There have been 10 violent crimes in the last eight days in San Jose; two were very close to Campbell city limits.

*Updated Aug. 24, 1:24 p.m.

The recent spike in violent crime taking place in San Jose has grabbed the attention of its neighbors, including Campbell.

Two incidents in particular occurred close to home: a murder in the 3000 block of Van Sansul Avenue, and  in the 3100 block of Cadillac Drive.

"Criminals obviously do not respect or care about jurisdictional boundaries or city borders," said Campbell Police Capt. Dave Carmichael. "The Campbell Police Department monitors crime trends and activity that occurs on our borders."

Along with monitoring activity, Campbell police officers also attend area intelligence meetings and briefings to "stay informed and help prevent crime in our community," Carmichael said.

Campbell PD communicates most frequently with the following local police departments:

  • San Jose Police Department
  • Santa Clara Police Department
  • Los Gatos Police Department

Other county law enforcement agencies are also contacted on a daily basis.

"Frequently, a field contact conducted by a Campbell Police Officer may be instrumental in solving a crime that took place in a neighboring jurisdiction," he said. "We believe that this collaborative approach better serves the broader community that we all share."

In order to stay on top of emerging trends, Carmichael said that the police department looks to a "strong proactive, rather than reactive, approach."

"We recognize that gang violence or other crime trends occurring elsewhere can also take place in Campbell," he said.

The last homicide in Campbell took place in 2007, and was gang-related according to Carmichael.

"Campbell is not immune from gangs or gang violence," he said. "However, we aggressively target criminal gangs utilizing a variety of law enforcement tactics. Our goal is to make it as difficult as possible for gangs to operate successfully in Campbell."

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth. Thank you for sharing your story and memories! Very truly yours, Karen Hunt Great grandaughter of the owner of the Original Fabers Cyclery.
