Teens Arrested After Crashing into Home Near Leigh High School

Two boys, age 17, are charged with reckless driving after one slams into home in the 5400 block of Leigh Avenue and another plows into pole in West San Jose; mother and child inside house injured.

Two 17-year-old boys were arrested Thursday and charged with felony reckless driving after being involved in a two-car accident that injured five people when one of the vehicles plowed into a West San Jose home.

The teenagers, who were driving BMWs, are believed to have been speeding southbound on Leigh Avenue when the silver vehicle slammed into a house in the 5400 block of Leigh Avenue near Anne Way just before 4 p.m. Wednesday.

The red car hit a pole. Inside the home, however, the silver BMW ran over a 40-year-old woman and her 9-year-old daughter. The mother remains hospitalized with life-threatening injuries, according to San Jose police spokesman Albert Morales.

The neighbors are setting up a fund at a local bank to help the mother and her family, said resident Dan Cuschieri, who contributed to the reporting of this story as it was breaking Wednesday afternoon.

The residents plan to discuss traffic calming measures at a neighborhood party this weekend, Cuschieri added. "... This is a real big issue near the schools," Cuschieri said, referring to the proximity of Campbell Union High School District's Leigh High School to the scene of the wreck.

Three people who were riding in the silver BMW were also treated at area hospitals for injuries and the driver of the red BMW was treated at the scene, police said.

Cuschieri, who lives close the scene of the accident, said he had witnessed a head-on collision in the neighborhood recently and hoped San Jose police would step up patrols.

The teens are no longer in custody and were released to their parents, police said.
