Power Restored After Crash Near Camden Turned Off the Lights

PG&E has restored power to residents of a San Jose neighborhood affected by an outage caused by a driver who crashed into a power pole on Monday night, a PG&E spokesman said.

The crash happened around 8:05 p.m. when a white Chevrolet Suburban smashed into a power pole in the 2200 block of Camden Avenue, shearing it in half and sending high-voltage power lines falling into the roadway, police said.

The driver, an 18-year-old San Jose resident, was not injured.

The outage left about 1,679 PG&E customers without power. The nearby Camden Academy was closed for the day because of the outage, spokeswoman Gaylene Hinkle said.

Crews worked to repair the damaged equipment, and PG&E had restored power to all but one customer in the area by 11 a.m., PG&E spokeswoman Monica Tell said.

Repairs were still being made late this morning and Tell said there may still be partial road closures.

Police said westbound Camden Avenue between Union and South Bascom avenues would remain closed to car and foot traffic until PG&E repairs are complete.

The cause of the crash is under investigation. Police said alcohol does not appear to have been a factor and that the teen driver is cooperating with investigators.
