Man Arrested in Suspected DUI Crash That Killed Passenger on Hwy 101 Thursday Morning
A Sunnyvale man was declared dead at the scene of this morning's wreck. This is the second DUI-related fatality on Highway 101 in less than a week.
The California Highway Patrol arrested a man who drove a car that crashed on U.S. Highway 101 and killed his passenger in Santa Clara this morning, a CHP spokesman said.
Officers responded to a report of an overturned vehicle on northbound Highway 101 at Great America Parkway around 11:55 p.m. Wednesday, Officer Ross Lee said.
CHP units arrived to find a black 2010 BMW 355i convertible on its wheels with major damage, Lee said.

Two men were inside the vehicle and extricated by emergency crews, he said. The passenger, a 45-year-old Sunnyvale man, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Ross.
The driver, identified as 42-year-old Stephen Craig Hunt of Sunnyvale, was transported to Stanford Hospital for major injuries, Ross said.
Hunt was arrested at the hospital on suspicion of DUI and vehicular manslaughter then booked into county jail without bail, according to the CHP.
A preliminary investigation showed the BMW was speeding on northbound Highway 101 from Great America Parkway where it was unable to negotiate a turn and left the roadway, he said.
The BMW then slid across northbound lanes on its roof and crashed into the center divide before it came to rest, according to Ross.
All northbound lanes of Highway 101 at Great America Parkway were closed at 12:07 a.m. and reopened shortly before 3 a.m., according to the CHP.
