Grenade Found in Abandoned House

Campbell Police, Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad came out on Saturday to check out a possible grenade in an abandoned house.

Campbell Patch received two tips from facebook readers on Saturday about some police activity.

"Police and sheriff activity about 2 hours ago and Latimer was blocked near Winchester," said one reader.

"Did u hear anything about the bomb squad dispatched to latimer 2day? They had the whole st shut down. I live very close. It was concerning," said another.

Capt. Dave Carmichael confirmed the activity and the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad involvement on March 24.

"We received a call at 11:19 a.m. that a clean up crew found a possible hand grenade in the garage of the residence at 175 W Rosemary Ave.," Carmichael said in an email. "Apparently, the house had been abandoned and the grenade was discovered in an old box."

Campbell police officers were unable to positively determine if the grenade was inert or just a relic, so the sheriff's office bomb squad was called in to assist.

The bomb squad took the grenade to a nearby field and destroyed it, Carmichael said.

"It is not uncommon to find old military ordinance," he said. "Usually, the devices turn out to be replicas or inert trainers that are purchased or kept as collectibles. However, if there is any doubt it is always best to contact the police rather than risk handling an active device."
