Dog, Rabbit Rescued from Two-Alarm Fire

Santa Clara County Fire Department dispatched nine fire engines to the morning blaze.

A fire at 45 Welker Ct. this morning was elevated to a two-alarm fire. Fire rescued a rabbit and a dog. No individuals or fire fighters were injured.

"We had 20 to 25 mile-an-hour winds blowing," said Acting Battalion Chief Santa Clara Fire Department Steve Werner. "When we have wind events like this, it makes it more challenging. We have our guard up a lot more. We know it can get going. It plays a significant outcome on the fire."

The call came in at 10:28 a.m. from a male that there was a fire at his house, Werner said.

Nine pieces of equipment arrived at the scene within 15 minutes of that call as well as several overhead units, he said. Three of those engines were undergoing training at the .

The house's roof was burnt off and the ceilings had dropped into the rooms. Other smaller fires started at the residence but the fire department put them out before they spread, Werner said.

"There wasn't much fire damage but the debris and water damage were significant," he said. "We were fortunate for having that extra training going on nearby."

The fire was cleared at 11:49 a.m. but investigators were on the scene until about 4:00 p.m.

Red Cross was at the scene assisting with the displaced individuals.
