By Bay City News Service:

A man who allegedly impersonated a police officer and sexually assaulted a woman in unincorporated San Jose earlier this month has been arrested, according to the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.

Hugo Cuseallpa, 25, of Cupertino, was arrested Tuesday on rape, sodomy, and performing lewd and lascivious acts charges, according to sheriff's officials.

On Feb. 1 a female victim was walking on Monterey Road near South San Jose around 2:30 a.m. when Cuseallpa allegedly picked her up in his car, sheriff's officials said.

Once she was in the vehicle, he allegedly told her he was a police officer and showed her a blue and gold "shield type badge" and threatened to arrest her if she didn't do what he said, officials said.

He then drove the victim to a parking lot and sexually assaulted her, officials said.

According to the sheriff's office, Cuseallpa was identified with help from several tips from the public, and a search of his vehicle and home turned up a badge and police-type equipment that the victim had reported seeing during the assault.

Cuseallpa is being held in the Santa Clara County Main Jail on $300,000 bail. The U.S. Marshals Service assisted in the investigation, according to the sheriff's office.
