A suspected drunk driver struck and killed a construction worker alongside Interstate Highway 680 in Milpitas early Friday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported at about 2:40 a.m. on northbound Highway 680 just south of the Scott Creek Road off-ramp, CHP officials said.

The worker was standing outside a construction site on the right hand shoulder of the highway when a motorist fatally struck him. The vehicle also crashed into the rear of a pickup truck and hit a second construction worker, according to the CHP.

CHP Officer Ron Simmons said the crash is being investigated as a DUI. The driver was taken to a hospital with serious injuries while the second construction worker was taken to Regional Medical Center of San Jose in stable condition, according to the CHP.

The name of the worker who was killed is not immediately being released.

Simmons said the crash initially prompted the closure of multiple lanes of northbound Highway 680.

The two left lanes have since reopened, but the far right lane was expected to be closed until at least 8 a.m., he said.
