Stone Griffin Galley Brings Art to Life on Friday Nights

It was the color that struck me first. Like bugs to a bright light, I was inexplicably compelled to walk into Stone Griffin Galley. The space seemed alive with the artist’s talent held inside- their passion and artistic flair. It’s a little humbling, seeing so much beauty in one place, especially if, like me, you can barely color in the lines.

If paintings were people, these ones would be a diverse bunch at a very hip party.

From paintings to photos, sculptures, jewelry and ­even art that you can sit on- Stone Griffin Gallery offers an art feast for the eyes.

Since recently relocating to a smaller and more central location in Downtown Campbell, owner Dana Smith has decided to cater to the night owls of Campbell by bringing the art in his gallery to life.

Not only does Stone Griffin Gallery stay open later on Friday nights, but Smith invites local artists to share their talent out on the sidewalk.

Artist John Cloud is one such talented individual. The Campbell native’s art mixes the world of graphic art and comics with a heavy dose of vibrant colors. The result is quite pleasurable.

Art has always been a passion for Cloud. “I’ve been drawing since I can remember,” he said.

Other artists or their representatives may also be at Stone Griffin Galley eager to share their inspirations behind their pieces during Friday Night Artist Nights.

For me, learning what goes into a piece of art can change my perspective.

Dr. Paula Sims explained some of the mystery behind local artist Kelly Telfer’s small robot-esq sculptures. These cute creatures positioned all over the gallery, are purposeful in design, often created out of objects like radios and Geiger counters, that still work.

Smith explains that he wanted to do something for the community. “It’s fun to look at different art,” he said.

Cloud is even working on a giant cutout of the Campbell water tower. When it is finished, it will include holes for kids to put their faces through-- a kitschy Campbell pride photo opportunity.

Watching art being made is definately more engaging than seeing it on a wall, so bring the whole family out for Friday Night Artist Nights. Best yet, it’s free!
