POLL: What Does Valentine's Day Mean to You?

This holiday, which tends to polarize people is said to revolve around love, but according to the National Retail Federation the average person will spend $126.03 today, the highest amount in the organization's 10-year survey history.

Here are some numbers (from the NRF) to think about as you drive/walk/run by those Valentine's displays today:

  • Total spending on jewelry is expected to reach $4.1 billion.
  • Total spending on a special evening out is expected to reach $3.5 billion.
  • Total spending on flowers is expected to reach $1.8 billion.
  • Total spending on candy is expected to reach $1.5 billion.
  • Total spending on clothing is expected to reach $1.4 billion.
  • Total spending on gift cards is expected to reach $1.1 billion.

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth.
