Cyclist Killed on San Tomas Expressway Was a Cautious Rider

Campbell Patch encourages the Campbell community to share its voice, opinion and thoughts through letters to the editor.

My name is Louis Tseng. The cyclist killed on San Tomas is Stanislaw Wicka. He is Polish-American, aged 59 (his birthday to 60 is next month). I've known him since 1984, when we started working together for about 10 years. He is also my cycling buddy.

I've read some of the comments in your forum and I want to clear a few things up.

First, he is very fit (a typical ride would be Santa Cruz and back, over the mountains), and there is no way he veered off into traffic. He is also very cautious cyclist, always aware of who is on the road. Finally, he always wears a helmet. I've never seen him without one.

There is no excuse a motorist does not stop immediately after hitting someone. I understand accidents happen, but this went beyond just an accident. Stan was dragged for over 20 feet to his death.
