A Day for the Dogs

It's the seventh annual National Puppy Day. Why are you thankful for your pup?

Every story is different. Some come from shelters, some come from the streets and some come straight from the breeders.

It's National Puppy Day and whether you currently have a puppy or you have a dog that used to be one, it's a nice time to stop and think about what you are thankful for about your canine.

This is Cholula, or Lula as we mostly call her. She's an almost 6-year-old Black Lab/Pit Bull Terrier Mix. The photo isn't one when she was a puppy but a more recent one that I like because it has her signature head tilt, which makes me smile.

Lula came to our family of her own accord. Just after our son was born she showed up on our front porch and never left. She and our son are the same age and get along great. She's his "big doggie."

I am thankful for our pup because of her tenderness, her sweetness and the smiles she elicits from my son when she sits and waits for a treat.

I invite everyone to upload a picture of their dog or puppy at the top of this piece and tell us in the comments what you're thankful about you furry companion.

We brought Buddy home Christmas Eve of 2010. Our daughter was almost 2 and I was about 4 months pregnant with our son. It was (and still is!) a busy time for sure. Now Buddy is about 1 1/2 and HUGE compared to the tiny little puppy we brought home. The thing is, he still thinks he is that tiny puppy! He is super sweet and gentle with our kids, but can have a big mean sounding bark when he needs too ;)

Maggie & Gracie are my girls. Gracie is Great Dane/Greyhound mix & Mags is Aussie/ Retreiver/Cocker mix. Gracie is a leaner, she leans against people, walls, whatever & she thinks she is a lap dog. Mags is a talker & has one blue eye & one brown. They are my traveling companions on my many trips back & forth to Oregon. They wait by the door when I'm gone from home & greet my like they thought they woud never see me again when I get back even if I've only been gone a few minutes. They comfort me when I'm down, they make me laugh with their crazy antics, they give me & the whole family unconditional & unlimited love. How can you not be thankful for that?

I love these stories! I gotta dig up a puppy photo of Lula to share. Thank you for sharing your stories about your wonderful dogs and keep them coming!
