Beloved Westmont Coach Remembered

Tom Sweeney had championship football teams at both Leigh and Westmont high schools.

Tom Sweeney, football coach scored his final touchdown on Friday, March 23, 2012.

Born on July 3,1944 and raised in San Luis Obispo, Calif. Sweeney graduated from SLO High School. He was an all around athlete playing baseball, basketball and football.

He attended Long Beach State then Cal Poly playing football at both schools. He earned his B.A. in Political Science and a Masters  Degree in Education at Cal Poly.

Before he began his career in teaching, Tom served three years as an officer in the USMC, which included a tour of duty in Viet Nam.

Tom taught History and PE in the for more than 30 years. He achieved his life goals by teaching and coaching football. He had championship football teams at both Leigh and Westmont high schools.

Tom was an avid reader with a wealth of knowledge. He left a lasting impression on all those he met with his knowledge, sense of humor and wisdom.

Tom is survived by his mother, Evelyn Sweeney, wife Susan, son Timothy (Vickie), daughter Amanda Sundstrom (Eric) and grandson, Shane.  Preceded in death by his father, Edward Sweeney and sister Georgianna Mariani.

Funeral Mass was held on April 2 at St. Christopher Church in San Jose.
