Student Journalist Describes a Star's Background

A Campbell Middle School 6th grader finds inspiration in the story of Gloria Estefan's life and her love of music.

This Campbell Middle School 6th grader wanted to know more about what drew Gloria Estefan to her music and how she gained the skills that made her a star. The young author turned her curiousity into an article as part of her journalism apprenticeship in the Citizen Schools program at CMS.

Gloria's Life Story

by Yesenia

Gloria Estefan used to live in Cuba when she was a girl, but many people were killed there. So then Gloria’s family moved to Miami, Florida.

After years of living in Florida she moved away to go to a private college and met Emilio Estefan. Gloria started a band in her private college. And once Gloria started the band, her life as a leader of the band and a singer began.

Gloria is now famous because of the band and Emilio. They would always rehearse either on stage or somewhere else around Miami. Now that Gloria was married to Emilio, her mom said that one day she would start her new life as a mom.  Gloria was very confident to start her new life with her husband.

Gloria grew up playing an instrument called a clarinet. Gloria first played the clarinet when she was about ten or eleven years old. In high school, Gloria’s clarinet playing was fantastic until she stopped. The reason why Gloria stopped playing the instrument is because she wanted to try something new in her life. She wanted to try singing for one chance in her life.

Once she tried something new, she really loved it.

That’s why Gloria’s life was full of beats and music experiences. That’s how Gloria’s life began. Before she stopped playing the clarinet, she joined a band called The All Star Band.

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth. Thank you for sharing your story and memories! Very truly yours, Karen Hunt Great grandaughter of the owner of the Original Fabers Cyclery.
