Campbell's Sundown Cinema Canceled for 2013

The popular nighttime summer movie series may come back in 2014.

Sundown Cinema, the popular nighttime movie series in downtown Campbell has been canceled for 2013.

"The good news is that we're working on a plan to move Sundown Cinema over to the Orchard City Green, which is the grassy courtyard next to the Campbell Library," said event organizer Sheldon Chang on the Downtown Campbell Business Association website. "It'd be a much nicer place for the movie series and we're talking to the City of Campbell about letting us move there next summer."

Organizers cite a dispute between the parking lot owner and the city of Campbell as the reason for the cancellation of this year's event.

The parking lot in question, located between The Courtyard and Orchard Valley Coffee was closed July 2011 and has remained chained off to the general public.

The city of Campbell and Xavier Sanchez, the lot's owner, came to an amicable agreement on the use of the lot as temporary parking about 13 years ago, when the Second Street Parking Garage was first being built.

The money the city was paying a month for the 30-car parking lot along Campbell Avenue was about $2,200 a month and coming out of Campbell Redevelopment Agency Funds.

On May 25, 2011 the department sent Sanchez a letter stating the city would be discontinuing its month-to-month agreement.

The 2013 season would have been the series' 10th year. Although the events is free, and is mostly volunteer driven, each night costs about $500 to put on so donations are encouraged.
