Campbell Veterans Memorial Offers Remembrance

It's been five years in the making but the Campbell Veterans Memorial is starting to come to life just outside Campbell City Hall.

The bricks have been laid and the etching of names of service men and women are beginning to appear.

There have been about 400 bricks sold to-date with an estimated 8,000 total planned as part of the memorial.

When completed, the  will include a plaza area, a fountain surrounded by U.S. Military service flags, a time line wall of major U.S. conflicts and a larger wall that will encompass an existing olive tree called "The Tree of Peace."

The area surrounding the Tree of Peace is designed to create a contemplative area to reflect on the lives of individuals who have sacrificed their lives in the conflicts over the years.

The memorial will also have an elaborate water system built in to the historical conflict wall.

The total cost of the project is estimated at $650,000, of which about $250,000 has been completed. Of this, Campbell Veterans Foundation Chairman Jim Free says $120,000 was pro-bono.

Straight donations, in-kind donations and the purchase of bricks and pavers are some of the ways the foundation has been fundraising for the project.

An 8×8-inch paver is a $500 donation and each may have up to six lines with 17 characters on each line (including spaces).

An 4×8-inch brick is a $150 donation and each brick may have up to three lines with 17 characters on each line (including spaces).
