Anna Eshoo to Speak at Memorial Day Ceremony

The annual Memorial Day Ceremony takes place May 28, 9:00-10:30 a.m.

The Campbell Veterans Memorial Foundation will be holding its annual May 28 from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. in the .

Congresswoman Anna Eshoo will be speaking at the free event and presenting the foundation with a flag that flew over the capital. The keynote speaker will be Major General Kent Hillhouse.

Held annually for what Campbell Veterans Memorial Foundation Chairman Jim Free says "many, many years," the event has been growing in attendance, in part because of the attention the has garnered over the last few years.

“Primarily, this event is to honor the fallen,” Free said. “It’s what Memorial Day is all about, but this year we will also be commemorating the ‘completion’ of Phase One of the memorial."

The is designated beside City Hall in downtown Campbell. The memorial will include a plaza area, a fountain surrounded by U.S. Military service flags, a time line wall of major U.S. conflicts and a larger wall that will encompass an existing olive tree called "The Tree of Peace."

The area surrounding the Tree of Peace is designed to create a contemplative area to reflect on the lives of individuals who have sacrificed their lives in the conflicts over the years.

The memorial will also have an elaborate water system built in to the historical conflict wall, said Bill Gould, the memorial's architect. "At points in the time line where people have lost life," Gould said, "water will come down from the trough and stain the face of the wall. It will visually track when people have given their life in service."

The Memorial Day celebration is free to the public and will begin promptly at 9:00 a.m. in front of Campbel City Hall on the Orchard City Green. Seating is limited.
