The streets of downtown Campbell fell somber this afternoon as police, military, family and friends waited to welcome a fallen soldier.
Army Second Lt. Travis A. Morgado, 25, of San Jose was transported to the in Campbell.
Morgado died May 23 in Zharay, Afghanistan of injuries sustained when, according to a release by the U.S. Department of Defense, insurgents attacked his patrol with an "improvised explosive device."
Campbell Police, along with the California Highway Patrol, San Jose Police and Los Gatos-Monte Sereno Police were at hand controlling traffic between No. Second and No. Central avenues on East Campbell Avenue.
According to the department of defense's release, Morgado was assigned to the 5th Battalion, 20th Infantry Regiment, 3rd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Infantry Division, Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA.
He began his military career in November 2010 when he first joined the Army.
According to a release by Joint Base Lewis-McChord, Morgado was a decorated soldier. His decorations included:

- Army Service Ribbon
- Overseas Ribbon
- NATO Medal
- Parachutists Badge
- Ranger Tab.
This was Morgado's first deployment.
