A Caboose Through the Orchard City
This black and white image was taken in 1994 but echoes life from decades earlier.
This week's history photo pays homage to the Orchard City's relationship with transportation systems.
On March 20, 1994, the Southern Pacific's Permanente Local, a freight train of coal hopper cars and cement covered hopper cars, which runs tri-weekly on the Vasona Branch from San Jose to the Kaiser Cement plant in Cupertino, passes the former site of the train station in Campbell, California.
The train is led by the following General Motors ElectroMotive Division diesel locomotives: GP9E 3873 (lettered for Southern Pacific's Cotton Belt Railroad subsidiary), GP9E 3339, GP9E 3412 and GP38-2 4815.

Until 1940, this railroad line continued south of Campbell all the way to Santa Cruz. This train was also the last Southern Pacific local freight train in the San Francisco Bay area to regularly utilize a caboose.
