Medical Association honors Kaiser Permanente physicians for excellence

Two Silicon Valley Docs Earn Honors at Annual Meet

 

                                One was cited  for being a “physician’s  physician,” the other honored for fulfilling “the most exalted goals of the medical profession”:  Dr.Diane Craig of Kaiser Permanente Santa Clara and Dr. Sharon Levine of The Permanente Medical Group received high  honors from the  Santa Clara County Medical Association  at its annual awards dinner.

                Dr. Diane Craig received the medical association’s “Outstanding Achievement in Medicine” honor, which is given to a doctor who’s made unique contributions to the betterment of patient care.

                Dr. Craig is a hospital-based specialist at the KP Santa Clara Medical Center, and she innovated the concept of a hospital based specialist teams throughout the Kaiser Permanente system. Studies have shown such teams improve quality and patient safety. She worked to improve systems preventing medicine administration errors. And recently, Dr. Craig was cited in a national best-selling book for her work reducing sepsis mortality through coordinated care and early interventions.

                Sepsis is an often-fatal infection reaction that can rapidly cause organ failure distant from the original infection site.

                “It’s an honor for Kaiser Permanente to be recognized for our work fighting this dangerous condition,’ says Dr Craig, “Almost half the deaths in hospitals across the country are due to sepsis and the work we have done is making a difference for our patients every day."
                Also honored was Dr. Sharon Levine, who is a Director of the Permanente Medical Group, which represents the physicians, many of the nurses and staff of the Kaiser Permanente system. She received the Medical Association’s Dr. Robert Burnett Legacy award, presented to those physicians who have demonstrated extraordinary visionary leadership.

                A board-certified pediatrician, Dr. Levine is a nationally-recognized expert and frequent speaker .on issues of health policy, drug use management, and the design and delivery of health care services. At the Medical Group, Dr. Levine oversees clinical education and leadership development. On the national stage, she has held academic appointments at several medical schools            and is a delegate to the California Medical Association.

 

“I am honored to have been chosen as the Robert D Burnett MD Legacy Awardee,” said Dr. Levine, a resident of Palo Alto, “and I am truly humbled to be the recipient of an award which celebrates leadership and commitment to patient care, and the highest goals and aspirations of the profession I love and have dedicated myself to preserving and enhancing.”
