Upcoming 'Wipeout Cancer Sports Day' Is Outdoor Family Fun for Good Cause!

This is the second year of the event, the brainchild of Los Gatos resident Caroline "Liner" Lee, a 2010 winner of the TV physical challenge show "Wipeout" who was diagnosed two years later with Stage IV colon cancer.

Outdoor fun for all ages that also raises money to support a local cancer nonprofit organization is the goal of Wipeout Cancer Sports Day for Charity, scheduled for Saturday, July 26, at the Campbell Community Center.

Children, families and adults are invited to sign up for a grass volleyball tournament, bicycle rides and a special obstacle course for children ages 4 to 12 -- and to enjoy a day of healthy activity knowing they are helping cancer patients and their families in Silicon Valley.

This is the second year of the event, the brainchild of Los Gatos resident Caroline “Liner” Lee, a 2010 winner of the TV physical challenge show “Wipeout” who was diagnosed two years later with Stage IV colon cancer.

After surgery and multiple rounds of chemotherapy, she is celebrating her way back to health with a mission: to increase cancer awareness and give back to the community that supported her during her treatment and recovery.

Wipeout Cancer Sports Day features some of Lee’s favorite physical activities – volleyball (she competed in a national tournament), bicycling (a key element of her triathlete and mountain biking adventures), and an obstacle course simplified for kids from what she had to conquer as a “Wipeout” champion.

A volleyball tournament with multiple divisions for various skill levels is scheduled throughout the day.  Three different bicycle rides are offered: a 60-mile challenge ride that starts at 7:30 a.m. and climbs to a 4,600-foot elevation on Skyline, a mostly-flat 31-mile fitness ride beginning at 9 a.m., and a family fun ride through Campbell neighborhoods for children and parents available throughout the day starting at 10 a.m.

The custom-designed obstacle course includes eight to 12 unique physical and mental challenges, scaled for four different age groups ranging from 4 to 12.  Each child will receive a finisher’s medal.  All participants receive lunch and a T-shirt.  Advance registration is recommended to ensure space is available and can be done online at www.wipeout-cancer.org

Proceeds from the event will benefit Cancer CAREpoint, a San Jose nonprofit organization that provides counseling, assistance, resources and education to all local cancer patients and their families.

More information about their services is on the website www.cancercarepoint.org.

The event is entirely organized and run by volunteers -- many of them Caroline’s friends, family and co-workers – and supported by business and individual sponsors including Accenture, BIG Design, Health Logic, The Lee Family (in memory of Lester H. Lee), Litepoint, New Connections Marketing, OPM International and Portola Valley Training Center.

“Wipeout Cancer Sports Day is about the community of support I received as a cancer patient, and my goal of bringing people together to raise money doing the thing I love most – sports,” said Lee.  “When I was diagnosed, people around me offered an enormous amount of love, compassion, support and help.  Cancer was a ‘gift’ in helping me prioritize my life and what is important to me, and that is giving back to others whose lives are touched by cancer.”
