Campbell at Work: The Garret is More Fun Than Work

The parking lot says it all.

There's a top end Tesla and a Mercedes and a Porsche, next to a row of mini vans and a bunch of pickups.

Since 1971 the Garret, at 1777 S. Bascom Ave.,  has been a place shared by business people at lunch, families at play and sports fanatics watching games.

With a menu that focuses on basics -- pizza, burgers, pasta, salads-- and big screens all over, it seems packed day and night. There are deals over here with bigwigs from eBay or the Pruneyard next to construction workers, next to a Christian elementary school softball team celebrating.

It was first located at the Pruneyard but moved to South Bascom when rents got too high in 1996. The restaurant is a small chain, with a new one in Los Gatos near the Campbell border, called Garret Station. Other locations include Jakes in Sunnyvale, Saratoga and Willow Glen, the Oasis in Menlo Park and the Boardwalk in Los Altos.

One of their strengths is supporting local kids teams and events.

It's a funny place. You order your food at the counter, pick up one of those buzzing things, but if it's not too busy, you don't have to get up to get your food. They find you. Or at least the manager does. Get the lowdown from him in the video.
