An Early Downtown Campbell

A snapshot of life more than 100 years ago.

This week's historic photo depicts a view of early Campbell Avenue across an orchard and includes the Young Mens Christian Association Building (also known as Campbell Hall), C.L. Willett's General Merchandise Store and the Hay, Grain and Feed Storefronts.

The black and white image, dated between 1889 and 1894 shows the South side of Campbell Avenue between Central Avenue and the Railroad Tracks (not visible on far left).

The photograph is believed to be from the "Santa Clara County Free Library, San Jose, Calif." Written in black ink is "Hall Stands Where Gilsen Butcher Shop (Campbell)."
