Two Years Since Hit and Run Left Campbell Teen with Traumatic Brain Injury

Shea Shaw, 17, was hit by a car on Jan. 8, 2011 while crossing an intersection in San Jose.

It has been two years since 17-year-old Campbell resident and Los Gatos High School student Shea Shaw crossed the intersection of Camden and Bascom avenues. Her life, and that of her family has never been the same.

The teen, along with her boyfriend were crossing the intersection at about 1:10 a.m. on Jan. 8, 2011 when Shea was hit by an oncoming car in the crosswalk.

The accident left Shea in a coma and with traumatic brain injury.

A security video of the accident was released to authorities. It was grainy but showed that there was a crowd of people across the street at the 7-Eleven who ran over to Shea when the car struck her. The driver of the car has not been found yet.

Since her accident, a website, Angels for Shea and a Facebook Page, Angels for Shea were created to keep supporters up-to-date on how the teen is doing and what they could do to help.

The website says that Shea is currently in a semi-conscious state:

"Shea is in a semi conscious state, Not a coma. It is called an emerging State. At times she is minimally conscious. This is a part of her brain in the healing state."

Shea currently lives with her mother, Cari Shaw and her father, Robbie sees her every week. Progress is slow for the teen.

"Shea is progressing slow but it's all positive improments," Robbie Shaw says.

Anyone with information about the hit-and-run is asked to contact San Jose Police Department at 408-409-5339.

Donations can be made:

  • At any Wells Fargo Bank to the Shea Shaw Donation Fund and will specifically assist Shea's family with her medical bills.
  • The Shea’s Hope Fund helps Shea and Cari Shaw with their life expenses.

I am impressed with CalTrans ability to do the cleanup, but the problem of homelessness does not goRead More away. Until we find a way to help these people in need, the camps will just move to another location, and everything will start all over again. The homeless need help - whether they want it or not. It's time to get that ball rolling.

Who is Tony Faber? Here is some history from a family member. My name is Karen Hunt and myRead More grandfather is and was Albert Jacob Faber. He owned and ran that bike shop up until his death in 1975. Subsequent to grandpa's death the house/building became the property of my grandmother, Lucille Faber. Upon her death, the property went to my mother, Jackie Faber-Cornick. In 1978, the business, not the building was sold to Alex Lariviere and he has conducted business since. The building was never sold and belongs to my mom, Jackie Cornick. It was her great-grandparents home back in the 1920's. We are shocked and saddened by this tremendous loss. At this time, we are trying to decide the fate of that beloved building. We are currently awaiting forensics tests, engineering and structural reports, and working with the City to keep it safe and prevent it from being vandalized and becoming a blight. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have about the history of Faber's Cyclery. My grandfather was a man of character and integrity. Sadly, neither of his two sons became involved in the business. With that said, anybody claiming to be a Faber or son of Albert Jacob, is just misrepresenting the truth. Thank you for sharing your story and memories! Very truly yours, Karen Hunt Great grandaughter of the owner of the Original Fabers Cyclery.
