We opened the Merc this morning and did a double take when we saw a photo of the Gasligher building with a new sign on it that said Vault 164.
Huh? They opened a restaurant in the Gaslighter and didn't tell us??
After clearing the sleep from our eyes we looked closer at the article which featured-
- A neo-classical building
- Built in the 20's
- Used to be a bank
- In the center of a downtown historic district
- Now a restaurant/bar
Other than the last item, it's no wonder we confused this building for the Gaslighter.
And guess what, they close at 11:00pm!
(In case you're new in town or don't keep up with these things, the most recent prospective tenant for the Gaslighter building insisted they couldn't make their restaurant/bar profitable unless they could stay open until 2:00am and lost their appeal of the Planning Commission's decision to uphold the midnight closing requirement of our Downtown Campbell Alcohol Policies)
Well, if Vault 164 can make it work in a historic bank building in Downtown San Mateo perhaps there's hope for Campbell's Gaslighter.
Any takers?
