Worst. App. Ever.

Did you know Campbell has a travel app? Don't waste the 99 cents.

As an iPhone/iPad family we enjoy exploring new apps and recently stumbled across an iPhone app for Campbell.

When we travel we've found local apps very helpful for discovering things to do and for getting around. Most are free and all are much cheaper and more portable than a guide book.

We thought "Wow, Campbell has a travel app, let's check it out!" We invested the 99 cents only to discover what might be the worst app ever.

OK, maybe that's an exaggeration, but to have any value, an app must be either fun, informative, or useful (or a combination), and this app is none of the above.

This app is full of:

  • Mis-information (e.g. "Free wifi may be found at the King's Head Pub on Orchard City Dr. at 1st St.")
  • Inaccuracies (e.g. "Things to Do- attend the annual Prunefest!")
  • Useless Trivia (e.g. "The Vasona Light Rail extension was the subject of a minor dispute with the Federal Railroad Administration over the sounding of train horns late at night. This dispute delayed the opening of most of the extension for two months before the grand opening on October 1, 2005.")
  • and Insults! (e.g. "The next town to the south is Los Gatos. Los Gatos boasts a larger downtown area, fancier shops, and richer residents.")

Obviously this enterprising app developer is not a Campbell resident!

Digging deeper, this app simply pulls from articles about Campbell on Wikipedia.org  and Wikitravel.org which are created and edited by users (one of whom thinks that the only places to eat in town are Taco Bravo, Royal Taj, and Stacks).

That's the bad news. The good news is that we can edit these listings and save hapless travelers hours trying to find the King's Head for a WiFi connection!

"Fancier shops?" "Richer residents?" We can't wait to check out the Los Gatos app!

That's too bad that the app isn't any good. But the part about Los Gatos being better? Oh man, that's just rude. I think this is the perfect challenge to all the software engineers living in Campbell: Build a better app for our fair city! Campbell deserves to be recognized as the gem that it is. Our city may be small, but it's pretty great!

Hear, hear, Bethany! :-)

The Los Gatos comment my be inappropriate, but it's not dishonest - the downtown area IS larger, the shops, in general, ARE fancier, and according to CUSD 60% of children in the district qualify for free or discounted school lunch - given that fact and comparing property prices, it is VERY LIKELY that their residents, on average, ARE richer. I haven't seen the app, and have no desire to acquire it, but I'm curious to know the reason why anybody would see the need to buy a "travel guide" for the city that they reside in! Fair play to the app developer for getting their 99c from you!

Tony, nobody claimed that the Los Gatos comment was "dishonest". David and Darlene said that it was insulting, and I said that it was "rude". So, no need to bust out the numbers on this one to prove anything ;) As for buying the app, they said they were curious and wanted to check it out. Who cares if they aren't travelers? I'm sure we've all looked up websites, apps, etc just out of curiosity. No harm in that. I stand by my original response: Although technically true, it was rude to state it that way, Campbell does need a new travel app, and our city is pretty great!

Thanks for your comments! Darlene agrees with Tony, so it's up to David and Bethany to carry the torch for Campbell. Here are David's responses to two of Tony's points- 1. Why would anyone want a travel guide for the city you reside in? Good question... certainly don't "need" it but as a resident I think Campbell is a cool place and care about visitors getting helpful information about where to go and what to do in my city, and this app, the only one available for Campbell, doesn't help at all and makes us look "uncool." 2. What's the problem stating "Los Gatos is richer" and their downtown is "fancier" if it's a fact? Well... facts can be used to shape perception and the clear implication by reporting those two facts and leaving out others is that Los Gatos is "better." For a travel guide both of those facts are irrelevant. Comparing one city to another is like comparing one kid to another- both are special and valuable in their own way and to imply that one is "better" is prejudicial. This app streams info from Wikipedia and WikiTravel, so this is what the internet is broadcasting about Campbell as well! Thanks for the dialogue!
